What's in a name: Monkfish
Many people ask me where the name Monkfish came from and whether it means anything. If you're a zaadz reader, you are in the know! The name came to me from free association on the theme of spiritual seeking. It popped into my head with its meaning attached. A monkfish is the kind of search (fish) a monk or nun might be engaged in. By which I mean not only or primarily professional monks and nuns, but the monks and nuns inside all of us. That part of us which searches continually for the truth in whatever shape and form that might take. Then I remembered that there is also a fish called Monkfish. The Monkfish is named for the cowl-like appearance near his head. He lives near the bottom of the ocean and is reknowned for his ugliness. take a peek: http://www.livescience.com/bestimg/index.php?url=ls_ugliest_monkfish_03.jpg&cat=uglyanimal. Monkfish as a food is often referred to as 'poor man's lobster.' Monkfish, in short, is a fish who is rather ugly, doesn't get much respect and is a 'bottom dweller'. That seemed like it might give a bad impression for a spiritual book publishing company but then again, I reasoned, at least it wasn't stuffy or holier than thou. And naming the press after a "lowly" animal might give my vegetarian soul some satisfaction. All you monkfishes in the sea, I proclaimed, I'm going to publicize your name throughout the world. You might even be celebrities one day. Smile for the cameras, brothers and sisters.
